How to Care for Your Skin After Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can feel like a game-changer — goodbye endless shaving and waxing, hello smooth skin. But your results don’t just depend on what happens in our treatment room. How you care for your skin afterward makes a big difference in healing, comfort, and the longevity of your results.

 

Here are some tips straight from our dermatology specialists at Allure Dermatology for giving your skin the TLC it needs after laser hair removal so you can enjoy that silky-smooth feeling for weeks to come. 

It starts right away

Your skin has just been through a controlled heat treatment, so it’s normal to experience mild redness, swelling, or sensitivity for the first couple of days. Think of it like a light sunburn — your skin needs time to recover.

In those first hours, we recommend skipping makeup, lotions, or deodorant on the treated area unless we give you the go-ahead.

It might be tempting, but avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts that make you sweat, as heat can irritate sensitive skin.

You can use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera to calm the area.

Keep your skin cool and protected

Cooling the skin can reduce redness and discomfort. A clean, cool compress (never ice directly on the skin) can be applied in short intervals during the first day. This helps soothe inflammation and promotes a calmer recovery.

Sun protection is a must. Treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, which can cause dark spots or irritation. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even if you’re just running errands. And for the first couple of weeks, avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area whenever possible.

Skip the scrubs (for now)

You might notice the treated hairs start to shed in the days following your session — this is normal and a sign the treatment is working. 

You might want to speed things along yourself, but we recommend avoiding aggressive exfoliation for at least a week. Harsh scrubs, chemical exfoliants, or retinoids can irritate freshly treated skin.

Once we say it’s safe, you can gently exfoliate to help loosen any shedding hairs and keep the skin smooth.

Avoid other harsh treatments

For at least two weeks post-treatment, avoid waxing, tweezing, or threading the treated area. These methods remove the hair from the follicle, which can interfere with your laser results. Shaving is typically fine between sessions since it doesn’t affect the follicle.

Similarly, avoid chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or other strong skin treatments on the area until your provider confirms it’s safe.

Keep skin hydrated

Moisturized skin not only feels better but also heals better. Choose gentle, fragrance-free lotions or creams that focus on hydration rather than heavy oils or actives. Ingredients like hyaluronic acids can help replenish the skin barrier without irritating it.

And don’t underestimate the power of staying hydrated from the inside — drinking enough water supports your skin’s healing and overall health.

Know when to call

Mild redness, swelling, and sensitivity are normal. But if you notice blistering, severe pain, signs of infection, or lingering irritation, contact our office right away. Early attention can prevent complications and ensure your skin heals well.
